Root canal treatment
When the soft tissue inside a tooth is damaged by deep decay or a crack, it can become painful and infected. Root canal treatment removes the damaged tissue so you can keep your natural tooth.
Why a root canal is needed
The root canal is the space in the center of a tooth that holds the pulp, the nerve tissue that lets a tooth sense hot and cold. A tooth can have up to four canals. When decay or a fracture reaches the pulp, bacteria can enter and multiply, and the pulp can die. Without treatment, the pain grows and the infection can spread.
What treatment involves
- Dr. Da Cunha removes the damaged pulp and cleans the canals.
- The canals are shaped, and medication is placed to kill bacteria if needed.
- Once the infection is cleared, the canals are filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material.
- The tooth is sealed with a permanent filling or crown to protect it.

How many visits does a root canal take?
Between one and three, depending on the condition of the tooth.
What happens if I wait?
The pain usually gets worse and the infection can spread, sometimes forming an abscess. Call us as soon as you notice symptoms.
