Complete and partial dentures
Dentures are custom-made, removable replacements for missing teeth. A partial denture fills the spaces left by missing teeth and keeps the rest from shifting. A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an arch.
Two kinds of complete dentures
- Immediate denture. Placed right after teeth are removed, so you are never without teeth. Because the gums are still healing, it may need adjustment after a few months.
- Conventional denture. Placed after the gums have had time to heal.
Getting a proper fit
Dr. Da Cunha takes impressions of your gums and a bite record to find the right jaw position. A trial denture, or “try-in”, lets you check the shape, color and fit before the final denture is made. Once it is placed, small adjustments make it comfortable.
Questions patients ask
How many visits does a denture take?
Usually two to five, because each denture is made and fitted for you.
Will I need adjustments?
Some minor adjustments are normal after a new denture is placed, especially with an immediate denture as the gums heal.
